Epilepsy and seizures are caused by a neurological condition of abnormal electrical activity in the brain. It doesn't matter if you are young or old, seizures can occur at any age. Some causes for epilepsy are not found, but other causes can be from an injury to the head, tumor, infection or even a birth defect. You can have seizures but not have epilepsy. Seizures can be the result of an illness like a high fever, tumors of the brain, drug or alcohol withdrawal, stroke or meningitis. Even certain medications can cause seizures.

The more common conception of an epileptic seizure is of someone having a 'fit'. This is the generalized tonic-clonic seizure, or 'grand mal' beginning with a sudden cry and a fall. The stiffening of the body that starts the process is called the tonic, the spasms and jerking that follow is called the clonic. This can look quite alarming, especially if the person manages to bite their tongue and blood appears.

During a whole brain seizure, a veritable "explosion" of electrical activity afflicts the entire brain. These are known as tonic-clonic seizures or, in an earlier parlance, grand mal seizures.

During these seizures, the person loses consciousness, no longer aware of anything around him. The seizure can last only a few minutes, or longer. He often loses control of his bladder. When he "wakes," he has no memory of anything happening to him.

Causes:

Injury to the brain surface results in scar tissue which may cause unstable electrical activity in that area and so epilepsy. The resulting fits or seizures vary in severity. Those that affect the entire brain are called "grand mal", whereas those only affecting a localised area are known as "petit mal".

1. Symptomatic Epilepsy- the case of epilepsy in which the reasons behind the disease can be well known. The causes can be various such as head injuries, meningitis, brain stroke and any other brain infection etc.

2. Idiopathic Epilepsy – is the case when no lucid causes behind epilepsy seizures are revealed. Having a low seizure threshold is often deemed to be the only reason behind it

3. Cryptogenic Epilepsy- it is the most challenging kind of epilepsy for the doctors for no reasons to it are known and medicines too are not much effective.
